Our community

The church is at the heart of our village - bringing people together year after year. These stories and pictures show how much it means to the community.

Art Mornings

On  Friday 19th July the second art morning with Toni Cunningham was held in the marquee.  Much colourful fun was had squirting shaving foam
on to plates, mixing in swirls of colour and then taking prints of the resulting marbling.  Shapes were then cut out and used to make striking
collages ranging from houses to people with lots in between.  Not many of us had done anything like it before  but, even those professing not
to be "artistic", were delighted with their finished results,   All looking forward to next month.

Thanks to Dawn for the hospitality of her beautiful garden on Sunday (7th July) and even her capacious conservatory, when a sudden shower sent everybody scurrying for shelter.  A turnout of at least 50 villagers and friends braved a chancy forecast and were well rewarded, welcoming old friends and new along with a glorious repast and even some live music and singing.  The sun came out later in the afternoon and two six year olds lined up chairs on the lawn and entertained the assembled company to a spontaneous variety comedy show

On Sunday 16th June we were joined by a group of adults and children for a ‘Bioblitz’ event to help identify the flora and fauna in the wildflower churchyard and to learn about why these spaces are vital for nature.  We were delighted to be joined by a former resident of the village, Mark Schofield, who was on hand to share his extensive knowledge of plants and wildlife.  Mark, who works for Plantlife, established the wildflower churchyard when he worked for Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust.

Armed with clipboards, nature guides and activities for the younger members, we set off with great enthusiasm to identify as much as we could – finding over 30 species of plants and numerous insects and birds, including a Great Spotted Woodpecker!  Even with the unpredictable weather, we all benefitted from being outside and learned so much from Mark, including the following riddle:

Five brothers we are, born at once from our mother.

Two bearded, two bare,

but one, neither one nor the other,

but to each of the others half-brother.

What are we?

(The five sepals that make up the calyx of the dog rose, Rosa Canina, are the five brothers!)

We came away with a much greater understanding of our native wildflowers, the importance of wildflower-rich habitats and how we can all play a part in the stewardship of our natural heritage.

New friendships were made and several participants have already been inspired to join local and national nature organisations.  And what better way to end the afternoon than with tea and cake in the marquee!
